Training

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Training Section is responsible for conducting all in-service training to members of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, as required by the North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards Division. Training includes but is not limited to weapons qualifications, OSHA and hazardous materials training, drivers training and defensive tactics type training. Each deputy goes through at least 54 hours of in-service training per year. The Training Section also coordinates all specialized training for deputies, detention officers and civilians, such as forensics, interview and interrogation, street level interdiction and cell extractions.
In addition to in-service requirements, the Training Section also coordinates multiple Basic Law Enforcement Training programs in conjunction with Fayetteville Technical Community College. Upon completion of the BLET program, deputies are then assigned a Field Training Officer for 420 hours of on-the-job training. The Training Section is also the responsible entity for recruiting and hiring practices to include background investigations and physical testing of new applicants. Lastly, the Training Section serves as the Sheriff’s Office’s testing and evaluation of new law enforcement tools and resources.
The Training Section consists of two Lieutenants, a Senior Sergeant, three Sergeants, and twelve Field Training Officers, designated as Corporals.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Training Center is a “State of the Art” training facility located at 4710 Corporation Drive, in the Cumberland County Industrial Park. The Training Center consists of classrooms, in-door firing range, firearm simulator, outdoor range, police officer physical abilities obstacle course and a dedicated driving pad. The Training Center was paid for by drug forfeiture funds, not utilizing any county money.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Hazardous Device Unit is also housed at the Sheriff’s Office Training Center.
