Deputy Sheriff and BLET Cadets Hiring Process

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office administers a thorough testing and selection process in its hiring procedures. It is incumbent upon the Sheriff’s Office to make sure only those candidates with the highest level of integrity are placed in a position of public trust and to ensure the best candidate is chosen for the position of Deputy Sheriff/Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET). The hiring process consists of the following sections:

Applications

The hiring process starts when you select the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) career path and fill out an online application. The timeline from when you apply to receive a conditional job offer takes 6-8 weeks. Applications are submitted electronically through our website (NEOGOV). Supporting documentation can be submitted through (NEOGOV), email, or by walking into the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, located at 131 Dick St, Fayetteville NC 28301.

Physical Assessment

On Physical Assessment Day, candidates will be required to complete pre-employment Medical History documents before the assessment. Candidates should arrive dressed in physical fitness attire and well-hydrated before the assessment.

Background Investigation

Candidates who complete the Physical Agility Test will be entered into a pool of candidates who are eligible for background investigation. This will determine if the candidate will be recommended for an oral interview. This will require the candidate to be fingerprinted.

Oral Board Interview

The oral interview is a more formal, in-depth question-and-answer session conducted by a select personnel panel.  Interviews will be scheduled based on the agency’s needs and the candidate’s overall qualifications. Candidates must know that during their interview the recruiter will be verifying documents and making sure that each candidate provides all personal information for the past 10 years.

  • The ability to communicate verbally and articulate his or her thoughts and reasoning.
  • The ability of a candidate to evaluate a situation.
  • The ability of the candidate to make decisions under pressure.
  • Will the candidate be a good fit for the agency?

Command Staff Approval

The Recruiting Team will present the referred Candidates who complete the oral board interview to the Sheriff and Chief Deputy. The Sheriff will review all the candidate’s files to determine the candidate’s suitability for employment with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.


Polygraph, Psychological, and Medical Exams

Polygraph

As part of the selection process, the candidates who are referred for hiring by the Sheriff will continue with the process of truth verification. This technique will utilize a polygraph instrument. The examiner will determine the truthfulness of the candidates and their suitability to be a law enforcement officer.

Psychological Exam

The psychological will help the agency make reasonably sure that the candidates perform the job and will not pose a risk or a danger to the public.

*The Commission shall require the administration of a psychological screening examination, including a face-to-face, in-person interview conducted by a licensed psychologist, to determine the criminal justice officer’s psychological suitability to properly fulfill the responsibilities of the criminal justice officer.

Medical Exam, and Drug Screening

The purpose of the Medical Exam is to determine if the potential employee is physically able to perform the duties of the job. The candidates may have a physical condition or injury which precludes them from performing the physical duties required.

*Psychological, Medical Exams, and Drug Screening are scheduled and paid for by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.


Human Resources

Congratulations!

This is the final phase of our application process. The Human Resources Specialist will call the candidate and inform them that they have completed the hiring process. You will receive a formal offer of employment with a start date and an itinerary of where the candidate will report on the first date. At this time any questions concerning benefits should be addressed with the Human Resources Specialist.
