Intership Program

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office offers unpaid internships to undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in public safety, such as law enforcement, detention, community control, and administration. Our internship program allows students to get quality hands-on experience while also providing an opportunity to explore a career with the agency.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Internship Program is available throughout the year in conjunction with academic semesters: spring (January-April), summer (May-August), and fall (September-December). It is recommended that students apply 10 – 12 weeks before the semester they wish to begin the internship to allow ample time to complete the selection process.

Requirements

Interested students must meet the following qualifications at the time of application to be considered for the program:

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be currently working on an undergraduate or graduate degree in any field related to the functions of a large public safety organization.
  • Must be fulfilling an academic credit.
  • A minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA is preferred.

Background Investigation

Students may be accepted to the internship program, based upon a satisfactory completion of the background investigation.

Work Schedule

Students are expected to intern for the required semester credit hours as dictated by the college or university.

Assignments

There are three components to the patrol/detention internship; ride-alongs with a Law Enforcement Deputy, observing a Detention Deputy manage an inmate pod, and observing Dispatchers and Emergency Call Takers receiving calls in real-time.

Student internships pertaining to professional support areas such as Accounting, Finance, and Information Technology allows students the opportunity to gain exposure in the different areas within the respective divisions/sections.

Applicants interested in the internship program are required to email ccsorecruiting@ccsonc.org and must include their expected date of graduation, major or field of study, and their desired semester. Upon receipt of your email, an Internship Coordinator will advise of your eligibility, provide you with the application instructions, and will add you to the appropriate roster.

Application instructions will be sent directly from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Internship Coordinator; if you’ve received instructions from any outside sources, that application will not be accepted. This includes your college/university advisors/coordinators.
