The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Training Section handles all in-service training as required by the North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards Division. Training includes but is not limited to Legal Updates, weapons qualifications, Rapid Deployment, OSHA and hazardous materials training, drivers training and defensive tactics type training. Each deputy goes through at least 96 hours of in-service training per year. The Training Section also coordinates all specialized training for deputies, detention officers and civilians, such as forensics, interview and interrogation, street level interdiction and cell extractions.
In addition to in-service requirements, the Training Section also coordinates with multiple Basic Law Enforcement Training programs in conjunction with the local Community Colleges. Upon completion of the BLET program, deputies are then assigned a Field Training Officer for 432 hours of on-the-job training. The Training Section also serves as the Sheriff’s Office testing facility for testing and evaluation of new law enforcement tools and resources.
The Training Section consists of a Lieutenant, a Senior Sergeant, two Sergeants, an administrative assistant, and twelve Field Training Officers, designated as Corporals. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office has a state of the art training facility at 4710 Corporation Drive in the Cumberland County Industrial Park. The Training Center consists of classrooms, in-door firing range, firearm simulator, outdoor range, police officer physical abilities obstacle course and a dedicated driving pad, which was paid for utilizing drug forfeiture funds.
