An inmate may be placed in special management for several reasons including: discipline, protective custody, suicide prevention, medical observation, inability to get along with other inmates and other reasons. Placement in special management is generally for a minimum of 14 days. While in special management an inmate’s privileges are restricted and access to canteen, visits and other privileges are generally denied. Inmates are generally allowed one hour each day for recreation and showers. Inmates in special management may be restricted in their access to the telephone. Inmates in special management each have windows in their rooms to provide them with daylight due to their close custody arrangements. These windows are frosted to prevent visual communication with persons outside the facility.
