Hiring Process
Deputy Sheriff and BLET Cadets
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office administers a thorough testing and selection process in its hiring procedures. It is incumbent upon the Sheriff’s Office to make sure only those candidates with the highest level of integrity are placed in a position of public trust and to ensure the best candidate is chosen for the position of Deputy Sheriff/Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET). The hiring process consists of the following sections:
Applications
- The hiring process starts when you select the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) career path and fill out an online application. The timeline from when you apply to receive a conditional job offer takes 6-8 weeks. Applications are submitted electronically through our website (NEOGOV). Supporting documentation can be submitted through (NEOGOV), email, or by walking into the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, located at 131 Dick St, Fayetteville NC 28301.
Physical Assessment
- On Physical Assessment Day, candidates will be required to complete pre-employment Medical History documents before the assessment. Candidates should arrive dressed in physical fitness attire and well-hydrated before the assessment.

Background Investigation
- Candidates who complete the Physical Agility Test will be entered into a pool of candidates who are eligible for background investigation. This will determine if the candidate will be recommended for an oral interview. This will require the candidate to be fingerprinted.
Oral Board Interview
The oral interview is a more formal, in-depth question-and-answer session conducted by a select personnel panel. Interviews will be scheduled based on the agency’s needs and the candidate’s overall qualifications. Candidates must know that during their interview the recruiter will be verifying documents and making sure that each candidate provides all personal information for the past 10 years.
What is the Board looking for?
- The ability to communicate verbally and articulate his or her thoughts and reasoning.
- The ability of a candidate to evaluate a situation.
- The ability of the candidate to make decisions under pressure.
- Will the candidate be a good fit for the agency?
Command Staff Approval
The Recruiting Team will present the referred Candidates who complete the oral board interview to the Sheriff and Chief Deputy. The Sheriff will review all the candidate’s files to determine the candidate’s suitability for employment with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Polygraph, Psychological, and Medical Exams
Polygraph
As part of the selection process, the candidates who are referred for hiring by the Sheriff will continue with the process of truth verification. This technique will utilize a polygraph instrument. The examiner will determine the truthfulness of the candidates and their suitability to be a law enforcement officer.
Psychological Exam
The psychological will help the agency make reasonably sure that the candidates perform the job and will not pose a risk or a danger to the public.
*The Commission shall require the administration of a psychological screening examination, including a face-to-face, in-person interview conducted by a licensed psychologist, to determine the criminal justice officer’s psychological suitability to properly fulfill the responsibilities of the criminal justice officer.
Medical Exam, and Drug Screening
The purpose of the Medical Exam is to determine if the potential employee is physically able to perform the duties of the job. The candidates may have a physical condition or injury which precludes them from performing the physical duties required.
*Psychological, Medical Exams, and Drug Screening are scheduled and paid for by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Human Resources

This is the final phase of our application process. The Human Resources Specialist will call the candidate and inform them that they have completed the hiring process. You will receive a formal offer of employment with a start date and an itinerary of where the candidate will report on the first date. At this time any questions concerning benefits should be addressed with the Human Resources Specialist.

- Candidate must reside within 60 miles of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

- For all prior criminal charges provide a notarized statement explaining the incident. (For all Misdemeanors & Felonies only)

Background Investigation

We’re looking for individuals who can follow directions and pay close attention to detail.

Application and Documentation Review
Supporting documentation can be submitted through (NEOGOV) or, by walking into the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, located at 131 Dick St, Fayetteville NC 28301.
A phone call appointment will be scheduled to complete an application review. Your application must be filled out completely and correctly to move to the background step. Our helpful human resources staff will assist you with getting your application just right.
Oral Interview Board
In-person interviews will be held with the hiring decision-makers. You will be contacted by Human Resources with a date, time, and location for your interview if you are selected.
Background Investigation
If you are selected to continue the process you will have to have both background and reference checks. You will be required to submit your fingerprints and be sent for a drug test.

Intership Program
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office offers unpaid internships to undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in public safety, such as law enforcement, detention, community control, and administration. Our internship program allows students to get quality hands-on experience while also providing an opportunity to explore a career with the agency.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Internship Program is available throughout the year in conjunction with academic semesters: spring (January-April), summer (May-August), and fall (September-December). It is recommended that students apply 10 – 12 weeks before the semester they wish to begin the internship to allow ample time to complete the selection process.
Requirements
Interested students must meet the following qualifications at the time of application to be considered for the program:
Requirements and Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be currently working on an undergraduate or graduate degree in any field related to the functions of a large public safety organization.
- Must be fulfilling an academic credit.
- A minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA is preferred.
Background Investigation
Students may be accepted to the internship program, based upon a satisfactory completion of the background investigation.
Work Schedule
Students are expected to intern for the required semester credit hours as dictated by the college or university.
Assignments
There are three components to the patrol/detention internship; ride-alongs with a Law Enforcement Deputy, observing a Detention Deputy manage an inmate pod, and observing Dispatchers and Emergency Call Takers receiving calls in real-time.
Student internships pertaining to professional support areas such as Accounting, Finance, and Information Technology allows students the opportunity to gain exposure in the different areas within the respective divisions/sections.
How to Apply
Applicants interested in the internship program are required to email ******@ccsonc.org and must include their expected date of graduation, major or field of study, and their desired semester. Upon receipt of your email, an Internship Coordinator will advise of your eligibility, provide you with the application instructions, and will add you to the appropriate roster.
Application instructions will be sent directly from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Internship Coordinator; if you’ve received instructions from any outside sources, that application will not be accepted. This includes your college/university advisors/coordinators.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are high school students able to apply for an internship?
No, our internships are designated for those who are 6-12 months from graduation. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office offers the Explorer Post 238 program designed for youths ages 14 through 20 who are interested in a law enforcement or related career. Go to the Programs & Charities tab and click on Explorer Post 238 for more information.
Can I apply for a position with the Sheriff’s Office while interning?
Yes, you can start the application process during your internship. As long as you’re in your last semester (prior to graduation) and meet the minimum age requirement, you can apply online at www.joinhcso.com. The job listings will note the age requirements and position requirements for each position.
Do I have to intern in all three areas?
Yes, students interested in a career in law enforcement are required to intern in three areas: Patrol, Detention, and Communications. By interning in all three areas, students will gain knowledge and understanding on how they contribute to the strength of the agency.
Do I need to be a resident of the state of Florida to apply?
No, students who are residents outside of the state of Florida can apply for the internship, as long as the student meets the required qualifications.
Do you offer internships to active military personnel?
No, we do not offer internships to active military personnel. The internship program is offered to students who are currently enrolled in a college or university and earning credit hours.
How are the internship semesters determined?
The start and end dates of each internship semester is usually coordinated around the academic calendars of the local colleges and universities.
How soon can I apply for an internship with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office?
Our internship program is currently extended to college students who are 6-12 months away from graduation.
I don’t need the credit hours, can I still apply to the internship program?
No, the internship program is for students who are required to take an internship, as required by their major. More so, the student will be receiving credit hours that will be applied to their degree program.
I have an international driver’s license; can I use this as a form of identification?
You can note the international driver’s license on the application but you will need to have a valid government issued identification card (state ID or drivers license) once the internship begins.
In lieu of an internship, can I instead shadow an area or section of the agency?
No, shadowing a particular area or section of the agency is not permitted. Outside of the internship program, citizens can schedule a ride along with any of the districts located throughout Cumberland County.
Is the internship full-time or part-time?
The internship is based off of the number of credit hours that are required by your college/university. Students will intern for the duration of a twelve hour shift.
Is this a paid internship program?
No, the internship program with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is unpaid. In lieu of a salary, students will receive credit hours towards their degree program.
